Doctors for America’s FDA Task Force in Washington, D.C. to Advocate for Patient Safety

Task Force members will meet with the White House to discuss the FDA-proposed ban on menthol, and members of Congress to discuss FDA funding

Washington, D.C.: This week, Doctors for America’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Task Force will be meeting with the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to urge the Biden administration to finalize the FDA-proposed ban on menthol cigarettes.

The meeting with OMB’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs comes after DFA’s FDA Task Force issued a recent public statement deploring delays in the review process, and voicing support for immediate finalization of the FDA rule banning menthol.

“As physicians, we have a duty to advocate for the wellbeing of the patients we treat, particularly when special interest groups like the tobacco industry are heavily invested in the effort to overturn the proposed menthol ban in order to protect their profits. Contrary to what the industry would have you believe, a nationwide ban on menthol cigarettes would help reduce health disparities and would ultimately save hundreds of thousands of lives,” – FDA Task Force Chair, Reshma Ramachandran

In addition to the meeting with administration officials, on Tuesday, Task Force members will head to Capitol Hill to meet with a bipartisan roster of lawmakers and staff to discuss the importance of ensuring FDA is provided the robust funding necessary for the agency to fulfill its regulatory mission and maintain its ‘gold-standard’ status.
