AAC Statement on the Ending of Medicaid Continuous Enrollment Provision

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Starting in April, up to 15 million Americans will be losing their health insurance coverage through Medicaid, including many who will remain eligible for the program. Through Medicaid Continuous Enrollment, we achieved the lowest uninsured rate in our country’s history at 8.0%. While still a long way from the appropriate goal of universal access to care, this achievement nevertheless shows what we can accomplish when we as a nation prioritize the health of our citizens.  Doctors for America calls on our elected leaders to ensure that all this progress is not lost.

Providing a simple and equitable transition to recertify Medicaid eligibility or identify new coverage for these individuals must be a top priority for state and local officials across the county.  Policy makers and public administrators must do everything in their power to see that no one currently enrolled falls through the cracks. Any American who no longer has access to affordable health insurance is an American who will likely face insurmountable barriers to care or exorbitant medical bills in our current healthcare system.

About Doctors for America:

Doctors for America (DFA) mobilizes doctors and medical students to be leaders in putting patients over politics to improve the health of our patients, communities, and nation. DFA is an organization of over 27,000 physician and medical student advocates in all 50 states, representing all areas of specialization. DFA teaches physicians and medical students advocacy skills and does advocacy at a state and federal level. Our impact areas focus on access to affordable care, community health and prevention, and health justice and equity. DFA focuses solely on what is best for our patients, not on the business side of medicine, and does not accept any funding from pharmaceutical or medical device companies, which uniquely positions DFA as the organization that puts patients over politics and patients over profits.
