Doctors For America’s Response to Shooting at Trump Rally
Washington, D.C.: Doctors for America (DFA) is deeply troubled by the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13th. This event underscores a stark reality: firearm violence remains a critical public health crisis in our nation, highlighted recently by our Surgeon General’s advisory. As physicians and public health professionals, we see firsthand the devastating impacts of firearm-related injuries and deaths. These tragedies are not isolated incidents; they are part of a broader epidemic that affects individuals, families, and communities across the United States.
Political violence is never acceptable. The attempted assassination of a former president is a clear reminder that no one is immune to the dangers posed by firearms. It highlights the urgent need for comprehensive firearm safety measures to protect all citizens, regardless of their status or position.
DFA stands with all victims of firearm violence and their families. The attempted assassination of a prominent figure should serve as a catalyst for change, reinforcing the necessity for immediate and decisive action to address firearm violence in our country. We urge lawmakers to collaborate across party lines and with leaders in firearm violence injury prevention to develop a solution to change the culture of firearm violence in our country. This is urgent and it must happen now.
