Session Overview
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the different immigration pathways and legal statuses that shape the experiences of immigrant and refugee communities. The session will also demystify the pathways to becoming a civil surgeon and the crucial roles these medical professionals play in supporting immigrant health and documentation needs. Finally, we’ll examine practical methods for medicolegal advocacy, equipping attendees with tools to better serve and advocate for refugee and immigrant populations in both clinical and policy settings.

Speaker: Shanna D. Stryker, MD, MPH
Shanna Stryker MD MPH (she/her) is a physician double-boarded in Family Medicine and Psychiatry and fellowship trained in Global Health. She is the co-director of the Office of Global Health at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and the medical lead of a medicolegal partnership with the Immigrant & Refugee Law Center, a nonprofit law center in Cincinnati.

Speaker: Nicole Bichir, MD
Nicole Bichir is a volunteer Associate Professor of Pediatrics with University of Cincinnati, practicing general pediatrics at an outpatient clinic associated with Cincinnati Children’s. She was the Director of Refugee Health (at the University of Louisville) for 5 years and teaches about immigrant health, ethics, climate change, and global health. She is a pro bono civil surgeon and has worked with several types of medicolegal partnership for immigrant advocacy.

Speaker: Nicole Damari, MD, MS
Nicole Damari is Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the University of Cincinnati where she works clinically as a med-peds hospitalist. She is an associate program director for both the med-peds and internal medicine residency programs in Cincinnati. Her non-clinical interests include physician-advocacy, medical education, and medical humanities.
