From Capitol Hill to the Clinic: How Federal Policy Shapes Frontline Care

Session Overview
In this session, Dr. Dave Chokshi—former NYC Health Commissioner and practicing physician—will explore how federal health policy decisions ripple down to state and local systems, ultimately shaping what clinicians can offer at the bedside. Drawing on lessons from New York City’s pandemic response and recent federal legislation affecting Medicaid, the ACA, and public health funding, this conversation will help medical professionals connect policy to practice—and understand how advocacy at all levels can protect patient care.
Speaker:
- Dr. Dave A. Chokshi, a physician and public health leader who served as the 43rd Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. During his tenure, he led New York City’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including its historic vaccination campaign, testing and treatment strategy, and reopening efforts—saving tens of thousands of lives. He also launched major public health initiatives, including the nation’s first publicly authorized overdose prevention centers and a landmark Board of Health resolution declaring racism a public health crisis.
