Doctors for America Statement on School Shooting in Madison, WI
Washington, D.C.: Doctors for America (DFA) is devastated by the tragic school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. Just two days after the 12th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, this horrific event underscores the ongoing public health crisis of gun violence.
Gun violence is the number one cause of death for children in our country. As physicians and medical students, we see firsthand the devastation of preventable injuries and deaths caused by gun violence. It is heartbreaking – and deeply unjust – every time we have to stand before families, delivering the devastating news that their loved ones were killed by firearm violence.
We must treat gun violence like the public health crisis that it is. Evidence-based solutions exist such as universal background checks and safe firearm storage laws, which have been proven to reduce firearm injuries and death. It is time for Congress to pass laws, such as these, that will protect our children, our communities, and our future. We demand meaningful action that will save lives.
