Doctors For America’s Statement on FDA’s Approval of Opill
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Doctors for America applauds the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recent approval of Opill, a birth control for over-the-counter use. This move is an important step in keeping reproductive care available to all who need it.
Opill, which is a daily progestin-only pill, has been on the market for 50 years and has been proven safe and effective. Expanding its access means that more Americans will have the opportunity to manage their health and needs.
Dr. Meghana Rao, Doctors for America’s Board Chair and a practicing OB/GYN, supports making Opill widely available. “Doctor’s for America’s Health Justice & Equity Impact Area and the FDA Task Force have been working in support of making Opill available over the counter to expand access, increase bodily autonomy, and ensure that individuals can decide for themselves if and when to become pregnant.”
